Call for grant-in-aid applications

The City’s Social Development and Early Childhood Development Department invites community organisations to apply for funding, which will allow them to assist those in need. The Department has made available an additional R3 million for specific social upliftment programmes through grant-in-aid (GIA) funding. In November last year, the City made available R20 million for GIA. Organisations can now apply and the closing date for applications is 24 March 2021.
The annual grant-in-aid funding, which is managed by the City’s Social Development and Early Childhood Development Department, will enable registered community organisations to provide much needed services such as trauma counselling, reintegration programmes for street people and substance abuse intervention. The minimum amount that can be applied for per project is R15 000.
‘We are grateful that we can once again assist with funding and support services. By working closely with community organisations, we can improve best practice interventions and the sharing of collective knowledge. It is also an opportunity to expand services to residents in need,’ said the Mayoral Committee Member for Community Service and Health, Councillor Zahid Badroodien.
The GIA applications by registered organisations should be for specific services and programmes within three different social sectors;
Gender-based violence (GBV)
Applications will be considered for trauma counselling for women and men between the ages of 18 and 25 in communities that have been identified in consultation with Social Development and Early Childhood Development Department
Proposals should be clear on the expansion of the knowledge base of women, men and youth on gender-based violence and how the programme can influence a positive attitude and behaviour change in communities and schools.
Programmes should assist in the understanding of how substance abuse influences GBV in communities. This will support the development of trauma-informed mentors in identified communities.
Street people
Applications should motivate for the provision of a developmental programme for street people, focussing on breaking the cycle of substance abuse and assisting with reintegration.
The objective will be a phased reintegration programme including, but not limited to, substance abuse intervention. It should also include soft skills and vocational training.
Substance abuse
Programmes should provide for substance abuse intervention services in conjunction with the City of Cape Town’s MATRIX programme.
In this regard, services should involve families and/or individuals focusing on environmental and community factors, as well as appropriate skills development.
With the GIA funding, the Social Development and Early Childhood Development Department will also implement a skills transfer component and project output aligned to the City’s Integrated Development Plan.
‘We hope that we get applications from various organisations so that we can widen the net and provide assistance to those most in need. Providing funding not only allows community organisations to assist vulnerable groups, but also allows for capacity building and creating new innovative ideas for social assistance and development. Grants-in-aid also strengthens partnerships between the City and community organisations,’ said Councillor Badroodien.
Proposals for grant-in-aid funding must be made in writing on an official application form which is available from all subcouncil offices or online at www.capetown.gov.za/grants-in-aid.
